Yam is one of the popular vegetable of Tamil Nadu. This is otherwise called Elephant foot since it resembles an elephant foot. This yam is rich in fiber and carbs. They are always available fresh in Tamil Nadu. But here where we lives, this vegetable is vary rare.

Even if they are available in stores, they won’t be that fresh. So we usually get the frozen ones. This is one of the frozen veggies that I use here for emergencies. So I thought of sharing how to cook this yam when it is frozen. It may be useful for some, who needs this recipe.

So let’s see how to cook this veggie when frozen.

Is the Yam needs to be thawed before cooking?

Every frozen veggies have different texture. Some vegetables need not be thawed. They can be directly used for cooking. But when it comes to Yam, it needs to be in room temperature water for 10 mins to get rid of the ice on them. So what I did was just put the cubed yam from frozen bags to room temperture water and thawed for 10 mins.

Ingredients

  • 200 gms Frozen Yam
  • 3 cups Water for boiling the yam
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Corn flour / Rice flour
  • Salt to taste

Instructions 

  • Thaw the yam by keeping it in water for 10 mins.
  • Boil water in a pan, cook the yam till it is soft. It takes around 10 mins.
  • In a kadai, heat oil and add fennel seeds.
  • Add chilli powder.
  • Add the boiled yam followed by salt and mix well.
  • After few mins, add the corn flour or rice flour.
  • Roast in low flame till crisp.

Notes

  • Thawing the yam in water for 10 mins helps to cook the yam quick.
  • You may add either corn flour or rice flour. It gives nice crisp output.
  • This varuval taste best with sambar rice or curd rice.
