Puttu is one of the South Indian breakfast recipe that is prepared with various flour. One of the basic puttu recipe is prepared with rice flour. Usually the raw rice is washed then dried and grinded in mill to make the puttu flour.

But nowadays, we get puttu flour in store which make our job even easier. In this recipe, I have used store bought rice flour to prepare the puttu. I haven’t used the puttu flour from store. This recipe will be useful for beginners to make soft and tasty puttu with rice flour.

This puttu is also my kids favorite breakfast recipe so we usually make atleast once in 10 days. The recipe is so simple and can be made within 15 mins. The main step is to make the rice flour moist and allow it to stay for 5 mins.

How to make Puttu without Puttu maker?

Generally, the puttu is prepared using puttu maker. Since I don’t have it, I have cooked it in idli pot by lining the idli plates with wet cloth. It turned out equally good.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Store bought rice flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • Water required
  • 1/2 cup Coconut grated
  • 4 tbsp Naatu Sakkarai / Sugar
  • 2 tsp Ghee

Instructions 

  • In a bowl, add the rice flour.
  • Add salt.
  • Add water little by little until the flour is moist. It must hold shape as in pic.
  • The flour must crumble when pressed slightly. Allow it rest for 5 mins.
  • Boil water in idli pot. Line the idli plate with wet cloth. Add the puttu flour and steam for 8 mins.
  • Now the puttu is ready.
  • Add grated coconut.
  • Add sugar or brown sugar.
  • Add ghee.
  • Serve.

Notes

  • The store bought rice flour I have used is not roasted.
  • Adding ghee adds extra flavor and taste to the dish.
  • You can serve the puttu with banana or boiled green moong bean as side.
