Chettinadu Crab Gravy|Crab Gravy|Nandu kulambu recipe

Hi, today I’m sharing a very tasty gravy recipe with crab. This recipe is prepared by my mom. The taste was very awesome so I gathered from her and posting with you.

Generally, crab is said to be good for cold. Since me and my hubby having cold severely, my mom prepared this tasty recipe for us. It was very superb and spicy that it comforted our cold. So try out this method of crab gravy and I’m sure you will like it friends.

Ingredients

  • 1 Kg Crab
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 medium Tomatoes
  • 1 Green chilli
  • 1 spoon Cumin seeds
  • 2 spoon Fennel seeds
  • 2 spoon Whole Black pepper
  • 1 spoon Kus kus
  • 2 spoon Oil
  • 1 spoon Garlic paste
  • 1 spoon Ginger paste
  • 3 spoon Grated coconut
  • 1/2 spoon Turmeric powder
  • 3/4 spoon Chilli powder
  • 1 spoon Kashmiri chilli powder(optional)
  • 2 spoon Coriander powder
  • Water required
  • Salt to taste
  • Handful Curry leaves

For tempering,

  • 4 spoon Oil
  • 1 Cardamom
  • 2 Cloves
  • 2 Cinnamon
  • 1 Star anise

Instructions 

  • Chop onions and tomatoes and keep them ready.
  • Clean and wash crab well and keep them.
  • Heat a kadai, add oil followed by jeera, fennel seeds and pepper and fry them.
  • Add kus kus.
  • Saute onions.
  • Add tomatoes and green chilli.
  • Add ginger paste.
  • Add garlic paste.
  • Add coconut.
  • Add all spice powder.
  • Saute them well and allow to cool.
  • Take the tempering items and keep ready.
  • Take the sauteed items in a blender and grind to paste adding little water.
  • Heat a big vessel or cooker, add oil and the tempering items.
  • Now add the grinded paste.
  • Add water.
  • Followed by salt.
  • Add kashmiri chilli powder and stir.
  • Add the crabs one by one.
  • Allow to boil for 10 mins.
  • The crab is cooked once the outer shell turns to orange colour as in pic.
  • Finally garnish with curry leaves.
  • Serve with rice.

Notes

Adding kasmiri powder gives nice color to the gravy. But it is optional.
Adjust pepper according to your spice level.
Adding coriander leaves, will change the flavor. So I skipped it.
